Our theatre services provide dedicated care to patients requiring surgical intervention across a number of specialities. These include:
- General surgery
- Head and neck
- Orthopaedic trauma
We have thirteen operating theatres – eight main theatres, three day theatres and two obstetric theatres. With a dedicated laparoscopic theatre, this technique is used extensively in general and gynaecology surgery.
Our teams comprise a range of disciplines, including registered nurses, operating department practitioners and theatre support workers.
We have programmes in place to support registered nurses with little or no experience of perioperative care to graduate from novice to expert.
We also support student operating department practitioners through their diploma in HE in partnership with Bournemouth University.
Theatre support workers generally have no previous experience and a comprehensive training programme ensures competence. We have recently introduced the Care Certificate for all support workers that now join our team.
We actively support staff development and career progression. There are a range of ways to undertake training, including online and bidding for Continual Professional Development units with our local universities.
Perioperative care is evolving with newer techniques in combination with new technology which allows all of our teams to continue to update skills and indeed to learn new skills.
